- Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is preparing for his fight with Jake Paul on July 20th in Arlington, Texas, to be shown on Netflix.
- On a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday, May 26th, Tyson suffered a “medical emergency” that caused paramedics to help as soon as it landed.
- Reports suggest it was an ulcer flare-up, but his issue wasn’t the reason there was a two-hour delay in the plane leaving Miami.
The boxing match between heavyweight legend Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul is shaping up to be one of the events of the summer. It might be a gimmick fight, but you can be sure that there will be lots of eyes on Netflix on July 20th.
However, there was a scare over the weekend as Tyson got on a flight from Miami, headed towards Los Angeles. Medical personnel had to be ready to board the plane upon arrival as Tyson had a “medical emergency”, according to ESPN.
It doesn’t seem like the incident will have any effect on the fight, which is scheduled for July 20th at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Still, it’s something to keep an eye on ahead of the big event.
Tyson’s “Ulcer Flare-Up” Causes Commotion On Flight, EMTs On Standby
Tyson was on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, which can be up to six hours on a direct flight. With about 30 minutes left on the flight, Tyson reportedly was in distress. A team of EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) boarded the plane to assist Tyson when it landed.
Tyson’s team put out a statement, saying that the former heavyweight champion is in good shape and gave a reason for his issues:
“Thankfully, Mr. Tyson is doing great. He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him.”
The statement continued from Tyson’s team:
“It’s false reporting that his medical attention caused the flight delay. This two-hour delay was due to an air conditioning issue on the aircraft.”
Paul has since responded to the incident via his X account:
It seems like Tyson is fine to continue training for his fight with Paul in just under two months. However, has it affected the odds for this huge event?
Have The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Betting Odds Changed?
The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson betting odds haven’t changed after this incident. Tyson opened up as a huge +300 underdog at popular online sportsbook Bovada, while Paul opened as a massive -400 favorite. The odds for this fight have since come down, with Bovada valuing Paul at -200, while Tyson comes in at +165.
Boxing betting sites haven’t changed these odds since the incident on the weekend, but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on. The two faced off earlier this month to increase interest in the fight:
One of the biggest talking points coming into this fight is Tyson’s conditioning. He didn’t look great in a split draw against another older fighter, Roy Jones Jr., back in September 2020. Iron Mike looked fine for the first two rounds of the eight-round exhibition, but he was winded by the third round. This issue with ulcers isn’t encouraging for those looking to bet on Tyson, who will be 58 on fight night.
This fight with Paul, who is 27, is also an eight-round fight, with each round timed at two minutes. The two boxers will have 14-oz gloves on, and they won’t be wearing headgear. If nothing else, it’ll be a popular night for Netflix and the platform’s attempts to get into the live sports business.
