The Isle of Capri Casino in Lake Charles was the first riverboat casino to be given approval by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board to move onto land in December 2019. The new $112.7 million casino project was supposed to open in May 2021, but the existing riverboat casino and the land-based site of the new resort were destroyed by Hurricane Laura in August 2020.
It can be recalled that in the wake of the Category 4 hurricane, the Isle of Capri Casino in Lake Charles was turned loose from its moorings and became stuck under the Calcasieu River Bridge on the I-10 for several hours. While the other Lake Charles casinos that were damaged by the hurricane later opened, the Isle remained closed.
In August 2021, Caesars Entertainment announced that construction of the new casino had commenced and that the plan was to reopen the Isle as the Horseshoe Casino Lake Charles in the fall of 2022. Although the new site won’t make it to its projected autumn deadline, the casino will finally be reopening before the end of 2022.
