Patrick Mahomes is on the verge of winning his second NFL MVP award.
The 27-year-old was named the NFL’s MVP during the 2018 season by throwing 5,097 passing yards with 50 TDs and only 12 INTs. The following season, Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory at Super Bowl LIV. The next two seasons were filled with disappointments, both for Mahomes and the Chiefs. Enter 2022.
Mahomes has delivered another 5,000-yard passing season and has the Chiefs on top of the team standings. At the top NFL sportsbooks, he has the best odds to win this year’s MVP award and if you look at the latest betting boards, it’s not even close.

The Chiefs QB leads the NFL in passing yards with 5,048 and passing yards per game at 315.5. Mahomes is also the NFL leader in passing touchdowns with 40 and QBR at 77.8. He also ranks second behind Tua Tagovailoa with a QB rating of 105.2 and is also only the third QB in NFL history to throw over 5K yards in a single season twice in his career.
Mahomes is also chasing some history during the final week of the 2022 NFL season. The Chiefs QB needs a combined 185 rush/pass yards to break Drew Brees’ single-season record of 5,562 total yards. Mahomes is also 429 yards away from Peyton Manning’s single-season passing mark of 4,777 and although he is likely not to shatter it, his 5,048 passing yards already rank as the 13th-best passing season ever, and he still has one game left to play.
Aside from individual success, Mahomes has also led the Chiefs to a 13-3 SU record, tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for the best mark in the league and one-half game better than the Buffalo Bills for the top spot in the AFC. After starting the season with a 4-2 SU mark, the Chiefs have won 9 out of their last 10 games played and are now the +385 favorites to win Super Bowl LVII.

According to the online sportsbook BetOnline, the NFL’s MVP race is down to four players. Mahomes is the overwhelming favorite at -900 odds while Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Eagles QB Jalen Hurts are next at +800. Josh Allen, who entered the season as the betting favorite, is now 4th at +1100 odds. To say that Mahomes has pulled away from the odds boards is an understatement.
Mahomes was the +120 favorite after Week 13 at BetOnline with Hurts close to him at +160 odds, Burrow at +750, and Allen at +900. Hurts bounced back a week later and reclaimed the top position at -150 odds with Mahomes dropping to +150. But after the Eagles QB went down with an injury, Mahomes’ surged to -375 and Allen moved up to +500 with Hurts dropping to +550.
Just last week, Mahomes was listed at +500. He moved to -600 last Tuesday and improved further to -750 on Wednesday. Before Thursday was over, BetOnline put his price tag at -900 in what now looks like an insurmountable lead, at least in the odds boards. Make no mistake, the MVP award will be voted by the Associated Press. However, if you look at the top NFL sportsbooks, the MVP race is over but the counting.
