- Bill Belichick is arguably the greatest head coach in NFL history, as he won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.
- Belichick and the Patriots parted ways following the 2023 season, and now Belichick is working in media for the 2024 campaign.
- Reports have surfaced that Belichick would like to get back on the sidelines next season.
Bill Belichick will go down in NFL history as one of the best head coaches ever, and he would probably be the favorite at NFL betting sites if there were odds for it. Belichick won six Super Bowls in New England, and he is one of three head coaches to win six NFL championships.
However, the Patriots struggled in the post-Tom Brady era, missing the playoffs in three of Belichick’s last four seasons. Belichick and the Patriots separated after a 4-13 2023 season.
But various outlets are reporting that Belichick, who is working in the media this season, wants to return to coaching for the 2025 season.
Belichick Had Offers Heading Into 2024, But He Declined
The ESPN report states that Belichick would like to come back next season, but he will be selective about the job he takes.
The report also reveals that the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams sniffed around Belichick for a defensive coordinator or assistant rule. However, Belichick wasn’t interested. It appears that he would want to only return as a head coach.
There were rumors in the summer that Belichick had also been approached by the Atlanta Falcons and had two interviews with owner Arthur Blank. The rumors were that Belichick wanted the control over football operations that he had in New England. With the Patriots, Belichick was not only the head coach, but he was also the general manager and made most, if not all, the football decisions.
However, Belichick’s draft record was spotty, at best, during the final years in New England. He never found a quarterback to replace Brady (not that anyone could replace Brady), or even just be a decent quarterback. The drafting of Mac Jones in 2021 was a disaster.
Blank rebuffed the reports that Belichick wanted power, instead claiming that Belichick wanted “a collaborative relationship”. But the Falcons moved on, and instead hired Raheem Morris, who was an assistant in Atlanta from 2015 to 2020. Morris has won two Super Bowls as a defensive coach or coordinator, first with Tampa Bay in 2002, and then with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.
This season, you’ll find Belichick each week on “The ManningCast”, ESPN’s alternate show during Monday Night Football starring Peyton and Eli Manning. Belichick will be on the show during the first half of every game. Of course, Belichick had many battles with Peyton on the field, and his Patriots lost two Super Bowls to Eli.
Where Could Belichick Land in 2025?
The NFL first coach fired odds are already moving after a busy Week 1 in the league. You could make a case that one-third of the NFL’s coaches are already in trouble. But Belichick isn’t going to a team that is perennially missing the playoffs. He will want a situation where he can step in and be ready to compete right away.
There are already odds up at NFL betting sites on Belichick’s next team. The Dallas Cowboys are favored right now, followed by the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Chicago Bears. If the Cowboys don’t go far this year, you could see Jerry Jones, one of the NFL’s richest owners, opening up his checkbook to get Belichick in the building. Belichick might have to cede some power to Jones, but they could make it work. Either way, Belichick will have plenty of suitors in 2024, if he chooses to return to the sidelines.
