On Saturday, January 27th, the WWE will hold its 2024 Royal Rumble PPV event live from the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is the 37th installment of the WWE’s second-most popular PPV franchise.
At the forefront of this event is the Men’s Royal Rumble match and the Women’s Royal Rumble match. The winners of each match will earn a world championship title shot. This year, the winners of both matches will get to choose which world champion they want to face at WrestleMania 40.

WWE United States Championship Match
Wrestler | odds |
---|---|
(c) Logan Paul | -2000 |
Kevin Owens | +700 |
Last November, Logan Paul defeated Rey Mysterio to capture the United States Championship at the Crown Jewel event. This marked the first WWE title victory of his career.
In December, Paul appeared on SmackDown and announced that there would be an eight-man tournament to determine his first challenger. At New Year’s Revolution, on January 5, 2024, Kevin Owens was able to win the tournament and earn a title shot at the Royal Rumble.
As much as we like Kevin Owens, there’s a reason why Paul is such a massive favorite. There’s no way that the WWE has Paul drop the title in his first defense. In fact, I don’t see Paul dropping the title before WrestleMania 40.
Paul’s popularity is a big reason why the WWE will push him with a championship belt around his waist. Although there’s no value on his odds, Paul winning is about as sure of a thing as Roman Reigns keeping the Universal Championship this weekend.
Undisputed WWE Universal Championship 4-Way Match
wrestler | odds |
---|---|
(c) Roman Reigns | -3000 |
Randy Orton | +800 |
LA Knight | +1400 |
AJ Styles | +1600 |
This four-way match is the culmination of several storylines being weaved into one pro wrestling potpourri. LA Knight lost to Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel, last November, due to interference from The Bloodline. Despite the loss, Knight declared that he was not done with Reigns.
At War Games, last November, Randy Orton returned to action after missing 18 months due to a back injury. Following Knight’s declaration, Orton also showed up on an episode of SmackDown and vowed revenge against The Bloodline. The WWE superstar had been embroiled in a feud with The Bloodline before his injury.
A few weeks later, The Bloodline came out to attack Knight and Orton, but a returning AJ Styles came out to help them. Styles also came out to attack Knight because he felt that the latter stole his spot in a tag-team match at Fastlane in October 2023.
This set up a triangle of turbulation between Orton, Knight and Styles. Additionally, all three men declared that they wanted a piece of Reigns and his Universal Championship.
At New Year’s Revolution, the three challengers fought each other in a triple-threat match to determine Reigns’ next opponent. That match ended in no contest after The Bloodline came out and attacked all three men.
SmackDown manager Nick Aldis responded to an attack by making a four-way match at Royal Rumble for Reigns’ title.
With that said, there’s no way that Reigns loses at Royal Rumble unless it’s by disqualification. Nevertheless, he’s walking out of this PPV with the title. Don’t expect Reigns to drop the belt until WM 40.
Women’s Royal Rumble Match
wrestler odds | wrestler odds |
---|---|
Bayley (+135) | Becky Lynch (+200) |
Jade Cargill (+300) | Nia Jax (+800) |
Raquel Rodriguez (+900) | Bianca Belair (+1000) |
Mercedes Mone/Sasha Banks (+1200) | Liv Morgan (+1400) |
Asuka (+1600) | Shayna Baszler (+2500) |
As much as I would like to see someone like Jade Cargill win this women’s Royal Rumble match, there’s too many WWE resources being put into the two betting favorites: Bayley and Becky Lynch.
In regards to Bayley, the slow burn of a babyface turn is heating up as Bayley’s relationship with her Damage CTRL teammates is coming to an end. This storyline has been ongoing since last summer and it should come to a head on the Road to WrestleMania.
Becky Lynch has come face-to-face with Rhea Ripley and wants to challenge her for the RAW Women’s Championship. Lynch declared that she will win the Royal Rumble match, and then challenge Ripley for the title at WM 40.
So, the question comes down to whether the WWE will give the victory to Bayley or Lynch on Saturday. My guess, it’s Bayley. Name the last time she’s won a huge match. Additionally, Bayley has never won the women’s RR match. However, Lynch won it in 2019.
All of Bayle’s contemporaries have won it as well, like: Asuka, Charlotte Flair, Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley. The following is a list of the women’s Royal Rumble winners since its inception in 2018:
- Asuka in 2018
- Becky Lynch in 2019
- Charlotte Flair in 2020
- Bianca Belair in 2021
- Ronda Rousey in 2022
- Rhea Ripley in 2023
It’s time to add Bayley to this list of previous winners. She certainly has earned this honor and she is involved in what’s most likely the top storyline in the women’s division.
Did I mention that Bayley’s teammate Iyo Sky holds the SmackDown Women’s Championship? Which title do you think Bayley would challenge for? It would certainly be the one that her soon-to-be former teammate is holding. This just furthers the point of having Bayley win the title and carrying a long-running storyline to WM 40 where it would come to a satisfying conclusion.
Most Eliminations In Women’s Royal Rumble Match
Wrestler odds | Wrestler odds |
---|---|
Raquel Rodriguez (+100) | Bayley (+200) |
Nia Jax (+200) | Jade Cargill (+200) |
Bianca Belair (+250) | Becky Lynch (+300) |
If you want to make a great first impression inside the squared circle, then you have Jade Cargill eliminate the most women in this Royal Rumble match. It’s a no-brainer. This match is perfectly suited for Cargill. Her impressive physical skills would be on display as she eliminates double-digit competitors.
Think back to 2014 when Rusev debuted on the main roster in the men’s Royal Rumble match. He was dominant until the rest of the roster ganged up on him and eliminated The Bulgarian Brute.
This is the impact that the WWE could have with Cargill by having her in-ring debut come at the Royal Rumble where she dominates.
Men’s Royal Rumble Match
Wrestler odds | Wrestler odds |
---|---|
CM Punk (+150) | Gunther (+150) |
Cody Rhodes (+225) | The Rock (+900) |
Drew McIntyre (+1000) | Jey Uso (+1400) |
Sami Zayn (+1800) | Kevin Owens (+2500) |
MJF +(+2500) | Brock Lesnar (+2500) |
For the first time in many years, the WWE has done a solid job presenting several wrestlers as worthy names to win the Men’s Royal Rumble match.
First, we have CM Punk, who returned last year to a huge ovation from the WWE Universe. Punk has never won the Royal Rumble and has also never main evented WrestleMania. Both of these firsts could happen this year if Punk wins this match on Saturday.
Cody Rhodes is still on a quest to punctuate his story by winning the Royal Rumble and taking down Roman Reigns who he lost to at WM 39 last year. Rhodes won the 2023 RR match, but was unsuccessful in beating Reigns. It was a controversial booking decision that had many fans and critics in an uproar.
Speaking of Reigns, Jey Uso would love to win this RR match and challenge his cousin at WM 40 to prove who is the real leader of the family. Drew McIntyre has been getting plenty of attention lately has he’s trying to stake his claim for a world title shot.
Then, we also have guys like Gunther, who clearly deserves to be elevated to the world title scene. Unfortunately, he will have to wait his turn. I believe Gunther’s time will come in 2025.
Randy Orton (2009, 2017) and The Rock (2000) have both won the RR match before. Neither man needs this victory. In the case of The Rock, he can just show up and get a title shot, which is what’s rumored for either the Elimination Chamber or WM 40.
Before I make my prediction, let’s get the MJF pipe dream out of the way. There’s no chance that MJF shows up at Royal Rumble. The former AEW World Champion is rumored to have signed a contract with AEW for many years to come. So, save your money and wager on one of the two men below.
However, just because MJF won’t be showing up doesn’t meant that the WWE won’t have a few surprise entrants. Typically, the Royal Rumble is synonymous with surprise entrants.
This year’s Men’s Royal Rumble match comes down to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.
The WWE has already planted seeds for a Punk feud with RAW World Champion Seth Rollins. So, does Punk really need to win the Royal Rumble match in order to face Rollins at WM 40? I don’t believe so. Additionally, I don’t see a Punk vs. Reigns feud happening between now and WrestleMania.
Cody Rhodes’ redemption tour is one of the biggest stories in the WWE since Rhodes returned to the promotion in 2022. He should’ve defeated Reigns last year, but the WWE overthought things and dropped the ball.
Now, the promotion has a chance to right the wrong they created last year. Rhodes has been the one wrestler who most fans and pundits believe will dethrone Reigns. WM 40 is the perfect backdrop for Rhodes to beat Reigns and finally win a WWE world championship.
I can see it now – confetti falling, Rhodes crying, his family hugging him and everyone talking about his father, Dusty Rhodes’ legacy. WWE and AEW stars will immediately take to social media and congratulate Rhodes. And, more importantly, the WWE will have a new path forward as Reigns slowly fades away into retirement.
The Most Eliminations In Men’s Royal Rumble Match
Wrestler (odds) | Wrestler (odds) |
---|---|
Gunther (+125) | Cody Rhodes (+200) |
Drew McIntyre (+400) | CM Punk (+500) |
Damien Priest (+700) | Solo Sikoa (+800) |
CM Punk and Cody Rhodes are locks to appear at WrestleMania 40 in major storylines. It’s debatable as to whom will be in the main event. For me, I pick Rhodes to win the men’s Rumble match and headline WM 40 against Roman Reigns where he will beat The Tribal Chief and win the Universal Championship.
I see CM Punk going on to feud Seth Rollins at WM 40, but not as the Royal Rumble winner. Same can be said for Drew McIntyre who’s contract is rumored to be up right after Mania.
Although Punk and Rhodes are at the top of the pecking order, the man who should come out of this PPV looking the most dominant is Gunther. And to accomplish this, the WWE needs to have him eliminate the most wrestler from the Rumble match. Gunther’s time as world champ might not be now, but by WM 41, we’re looking at the new WWE World Champion. Take Gunther for this prop bet.
WWE Royal Rumble Prop Bets
The following prop bets require both wrestlers to win their respective Royal Rumble matches:
wrestlers | odds |
---|---|
CM Punk & Becky Lynch | +600 |
Gunther & Bayley | +850 |
C. Rhodes & J. Cargill | +1100 |
CM Punk is the odds-on favorite to win the men’s Rumble match, while Becky Lynch is favored to win the women’s Rumble match. I laid the argument above, for why these two wrestlers won’t win their respective matches. However, a +600 return is quite enticing.
As much as I would like to see Gunther win the Rumble match, I don’t believe it will happen until 2025. I’ve said for most of 2023 that Gunther will be elevated to the main event scene and become world champ one day. I think that can happen by end of 2024. However, that’s still a big difference between a title contender and being in the main event of WrestleMania.
Jade Cargill has everything that the WWE wants in a superstar. She oozes “it factor” and looks the part of a world champion. However, I don’t see Cargill winning the women’s Rumble match just yet. Like Gunther, her time will come next year.
Of these three prop bets, the one to take a flier on is Punk and Lynch. Although I chose against them in their matches, this is a good way to hedge your bets above.
