Shohei Ohtani Odds-On Favorites

We are examining the two likeliest landing spots for Ohtani. From what we’ve gathered, the Dodgers and Blue Jays have the best Ohtani odds. That being said, the Cubs and Braves have to be considered in the mix.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-150)

Ohtani arrived from Japan to sign with the Angels in 2018. A place he has called home for five years, Ohtani has deep roots in the Los Angeles area. If Ohtani wants to instantly contend for a World Series while remaining in Los Angeles, the Dodgers make the perfect sense.

He can leave the dysfunctional Angels organization, which can’t find a way to win with Mike Trout and Ohtani, to a Dodgers team committed to winning. All the while, Ohtani doesn’t have to uproot his life by moving to a new city.

This is a rare opportunity for a superstar player to stay in a city he presumably likes, while jumping to a contender. 99 percent of the time, players have to move to land with a major contender. That isn’t the case with Ohtani in Los Angeles, California.

There is one small blemish allegedly on the Dodgers’ chances: his camp wants negotiations to be kept quiet. However, manager Dave Roberts spilled the beans and revealed that the Dodgers met with Ohtani in Los Angeles. As a result, there was some conflict between Roberts and the front office2.

Toronto Blue Jays (+400)

In 2014, heavyweight MLB agent Scott Boras called the Jays’ owners cheap3. However, that narrative has since changed in Toronto.

Toronto has been an attractive destination for prized free agents. George Springer, Hyun-jin Ryu, and Kevin Gausman all signed lucrative deals with the Blue Jays.

To Boras’ credit, he recently stated that the Blue Jays have been actively involved with his clients during the offseason4. In other words, Rogers Communications no longer has a reputation for being cheap.

Nor should they be cheap. Rogers Communications is the richest corporation in baseball. Currently, Rogers Communication has a market cap of roughly $23 billion, with CEO Edward S. Rogers III worth $11.5 billion.

In other words, if it comes down to money, the Blue Jays have the power to outbid other clubs. Additionally, being a beloved player and dominating the baseball market in two countries, Japan and Canada, might be appealing to Ohtani.

Value Bet: Shohei Ohtani to New York Yankees (+2000)

The Yankees addressed their outfield by signing Juan Soto. Along with their outfield in better shape, Aaron Judge and Soto in the batting order will be a nightmare for pitchers.

Now, with Soto signed, are the Yankees still going to make a pitch for Ohtani? They have not been mentioned as a front-runner among the Ohtani rumors from the media. Nevertheless, this is the Yankees we are talking about.

For more than two decades, the Yankees have made no qualms about spending money to attract the biggest free agents. On Tuesday, GM Brian Cashman revealed that he has been in contact with Ohtani’s agent.

As we noted, Ohtani has wanted contract talks to be kept silent. So, could a mystery team sneak up and sign Ohtani?

It’s plausible, and the Yankees always have to be in the mix as a sleeper club when it comes to superstars. Shohei Ohtani’s team next team odds are worth a look on the Yankees at sports betting sites.

Longshot Bet: Shohei Ohtani to Boston Red Sox (+2500)

All 30 MLB clubs are open to signing Ohtani. It comes down to whether they make a compelling enough pitch and have the money to lure him to their team.

Along with the Yankees, there are two clubs that could be lurking in the shadows for Ohtani: the Mariners and Red Sox. Playing for the Seattle Mariners, Ichiro Suzuki’s former team, is an interesting option. But, for a true longshot bet, why not a historic franchise like the Red Sox?

While Ohtani has not shown any interest in Boston, the Red Sox, like the Yankees, are not shy about making significant waves in free agency.

The team’s behind the Red Sox on the Shohei Ohtani’s free agency odds board are not realistic destinations. Ohtani most definitely is not signing with the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians, and so on.

Despite how unlikely it may be, the team with the longest odds that has the most realistic chance to sign him is the Red Sox at +2500.

What Team Is Shohei Ohtani On In 2024?

We will preface this by saying that no one knows where Ohtani will be playing in 2024. All the rumors that you’ve probably been reading are just that, rumors. The media will say anything to keep the drama rolling.

As much as we believe that Ohtani will ultimately sign with the Dodgers, the Blue Jays probably have a better than 20 percent chance. They should probably be priced at +175 to +200 rather than +400 to sign Ohtani.

With that in mind, if you want to bet on the Jays at +400, we are not going to stop you. The Jays have proven that they are capable of signing top free agents, so that notion has to die. That said, the Dodgers still make the most sense for Ohtani.

He gets to stay in a city he’s familiar with in Los Angeles, make roughly $600 million, and compete for a World Series every year he’s under contract. Currently, the Dodgers are co-favorites with the Braves to win next year’s title at World Series betting sites.

We afford Ohtani a 65 percent chance of signing with the Dodgers, which is 5 percent better than the implied probability at -150 odds. That signals some decent value on Ohtani playing for the Dodgers in 2024.
