When does Spring Training start?
MLB Spring Training starts on Thursday, February 22, in a Cactus League matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. The Grapefruit League schedule officially starts on Saturday, February 24.
Grapefruit League Early Predictions
While the odds have not been posted yet, we can still provide our 2024 Grapefruit League predictions. In our opinion, the best bet and most dangerous team in the Grapefruit League will be the Baltimore Orioles.
There are a few reasons to like the Orioles this year. First, the Orioles are one of the fastest up-and-comers in MLB. Last season, the Orioles finished 101-61 to capture the AL East after an 83-79 campaign in 2022.
In 2023, the Orioles were one of the youngest teams in the Majors. The Orioles’ average roster age was a respectable 28.2 years old1. Additionally, the No. 1 prospect in baseball could be on the Orioles’ Opening Day roster.
The Orioles do not have a second baseman for their Opening Day roster. Top prospect 20-year-old Jackson Holliday is scheduled to play second in the preseason. With a strong spring, Holliday should be an Opening Day starter.
In addition to Holliday, highly-coveted prospects Coby Mayo, Samuel Basallo, and Colton Cowser have been invited to the Orioles’ camp. All four players are top-30 MLB prospects2.
