The British Open odds for the 2024 tournament have a familiar face at the top of the list. Scottie Scheffler is on a roll not seen since prime Tiger Woods. However, he still only has two major championship wins, from the Masters in 2022 and 2024.
This year’s Open Championship takes place at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, which is about 30 miles southwest of Glasgow. It was last played here in 2016, when Henrik Stenson held off Phil Mickelson in a tight duel to win his only major championship.
Can Scheffler step up at Royal Troon? Can Rory McIlroy get over his US Open heartbreak? I provide answers to these questions and more, as I analyze the Open odds, and give you my British Open prediction in this article.
2024 British Open Winner Odds
All British Open Odds courtesy of Bovada:
PLAYER | BRITISH OPEN ODDS |
---|---|
Scottie Scheffler | +550 |
Rory McIlroy | +800 |
Ludvig Åberg | +1400 |
Xander Schauffele | +1500 |
Bryson DeChambeau | +1600 |
Collin Morikawa | +1800 |
Tommy Fleetwood | +2500 |
Tyrrell Hatton | +2500 |
Jon Rahm | +2800 |
Robert MacIntyre | +3000 |
Viktor Hovland | +3000 |
Scheffler is a sizeable favorite going into Royal Troon because he’s been dominating the PGA Tour all season long.
That being said, Scheffler’s price to win The Open Championship has decreased since July 4. While he remains the betting favorite, his odds have shifted from +450 to +550. This represents an 18.2% to 15.4% change in implied win probability.
PGA Championship odds valued Scheffler at +350, but an arrest due to an incident with an officer threw him off (the charges were dropped later). The world #1 still managed a solid T8 at Valhalla. US Open golf odds favored Scheffler at +300, but he couldn’t figure out the greens at Pinehurst No.2 and finished T41.
Following Scheffler’s Open Championship odds, 2014 Open Champion Rory McIlroy (+800) is next at 11.1%, while rising star Ludvig Aberg’s price has shortened to +1400 for a 6.7% implied chance. Earlier this month, Aberg was +1800, so he’s on the move at sports betting apps!
There is some definite value throughout the board, and given the style of play needed to win at the British Open, that makes sense. It’s often blustery when it comes to links golf, and players who can control their ball flight will find themselves near the top of the leaderboard.
For example, in addition to Aberg at +1400, PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele (+1500) and 2021 Open Champion Collin Morikawa (+1800) should be on your radar at the golf betting sites.
You can bet on all of these players and more, along with some great props like top-5s, top-10s, and matchup props at Bovada. You can find up-to-date odds on the British Open 2024 odds at Bovada by navigating to All Sports > Golf > The Open.
The Open Championship Favorites in 2024
The following players are most likely to win The Open Championship this year, according to the latest odds.
Scottie Scheffler (+550)
Despite showing he was human at Pinehurst No. 2, Scheffler is still having a phenomenal season. Sandwiched around that T41 was a win at the Memorial Tournament, and a playoff win over good friend Tom Kim at the Travelers Championship. The latter was overshadowed by environmental protestors storming the 18th green as Scheffler and Kim were lining up their putts.
Scheffler decided to bypass the Scottish Open to prepare for The Open. The rest of the field welcomed his absence from the tournament!
After missing the Scottish Open, public sentiment dropped on Scheffler’s odds to win the British Open, though. As I noted, he remains the favorite, but not as strong as earlier this month.
Scheffler has 785 points in the Official World Golf Ranking. McIlroy is next with 422 points. He is also running away in the FedEx Cup standings, posting 5,768 points so far. Schauffele has 3,307 points.
Tournament Form
In 15 starts this season, Scheffler has six wins, 13 top-10s, and hasn’t missed a cut all season. The T41 at the US Open was his worst performance of the season, by far. However, he’ll be rested for Royal Troon, and a fresh Scheffler could run away with any golf tournament.

Scheffler is the first player since the late, great Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six tournaments before July. And the scariest part is: he could still be better.
Scheffler 2024 Stats (PGA):
Scheffler still sits at, or near, the top of the major PGA stats, with one big exception.
- Scoring Average: 1st (67.8)
- SG: Total: 1st (2.760)
- SG: Off the Tee: 3rd (0.838)
- SG: Approach the Green: 1st (1.485)
- SG: Around the Green: 9th (0.400)
- SG: Putting: 85th (0.037)
His putting sticks out like a sore thumb, even though it is improving. All Scheffler needs to do is putt above average, and he should win even more than he has.
Rory McIlroy (+800)
McIlroy is still talented to be rated so high at online sportsbooks. When he’s on, he might have the best-looking game in the world. This makes his stunning collapse at the US Open so difficult to understand.
McIlroy didn’t talk to reporters after the tournament and has taken a break from golf. The 35-year-old native of Northern Ireland made his return in the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. He didn’t show any signs of letting the loss impact his game, as McIlroy shot 14-under to finish T4.
Tournament Form
McIlroy has 15 starts in 2024, with six top-10s and like Scheffler, he has made every cut. He won a team event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, with Shane Lowry, and then won the Wells Fargo Championship two weeks later.

- June 9, 2024 – T15 at the Memorial Tournament
- June 16, 2024 – 2nd at the US Open
- July 14, 2024 – T4 at the Scottish Open
McIlroy is pretty consistent as of late and can win any tournament. It’s going to be interesting to see if he can get over what happened at Pinehurst No.2. McIlroy finished T5 at the British Open when it was played at Royal Troon, so there should be good vibes.
Stats and Performance
The numbers indicate that McIlroy is still excellent at the game of golf:
- Scoring Average: 15th (69.61)
- SG: Total: 3rd (1.869)
- SG: Off the Tee: 2nd (0.883)
- SG: Approach the Green: 22nd (0.432)
- SG: Around the Green: 39th (0.222)
- SG: Putting: 36th (0.331)
We know McIlroy can do it, but he has to get better in clutch situations.
Ludvig Aberg (+1400)
Following a solid performance in the Scottish Open, Aberg’s 2024 Open Championship odds have catapulted into the top 3. He moved from having the fifth-best price to win the tournament to the third, replacing Bryson DeChambeau in the process.
At only 24 years old, Abert is a rising star on the PGA Tour. He continues to show improved form with each passing month. It appears that it’s only going to be a matter of time before Aberg strikes at a major tournament.
Is the 2024 Open Championship finally his moment to shine? It appears plenty of bettors like Aberg’s chances in his first British Open, as confidence continues to build behind the Swede after showcasing impressive form in the Scottish Open.
Tournament Form
Aberg has made 15 appearances in PGA Tour events this season. He’s shown considerable improvement over previous years, and will likely continue growing. The young Swede has recorded seven top-10 finishes and two runner-up performances, including at Augusta National in the Masters.
With a fourth-place ranking in the OWGR, Aberg has skyrocketed up the board over the last year. Additionally, he is sixth in the FedEx Cup standings for the 2024 season. While Aberg only has one PGA Tour win in 31 career starts, there should be plenty more in his future.

Those are some impressive results for Aberg, and a stunning improvement in form compared to earlier in his career! If Aberg is doing this at 24 years old, his prime promises to include several big wins.
Stats and Performance
Aberg’s numbers suggest that he is in top form and one of the best on the PGA Tour in 2024:
- Scoring Average: 8th (69.28)
- SG: Total: 6th (1.312)
- SG: Off the Tee: 14th (0.523)

The Open 2024 Longshots
The following sleepers deserve your attention for the British Open Championship 2024.
-
The Englishman is probably the best player in the world without a major now that Schauffele won the PGA Championship. Fleetwood has finished between T13 and T26 in six of his previous seven entries, and has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four British Open starts. This guy is very dangerous, and I won’t be shocked if he lifts the trophy this year.
-
The mercurial Englishman is coming off a win at LIV Nashville, and he finished T5 alongside McIlroy at Royal Troon in 2014. He finished T9 at the Masters, T63 at the PGA Championship and T26 at the US Open. If Hatton can keep his head, he has a great chance to win his first major championship.
-
Pavon is the definition of a longshot, according to these British Open odds. However, he won the Farmers Insurance Open at tough Torrey Pines earlier this season. He was paired with DeChambeau in the final group at the US Open and finished a solid solo fifth. The Frenchman had a solid performance with a T16 finish at the Travelers, where he shot a third-round 62.
2024 British Open Prediction and Betting Pick
Scheffler, McIlroy, and DeChambeau are all deserving of being favored by the 2024 British Open odds. Based on record and having grown up playing links golf, McIlroy would get the edge. However, it’s going to be tough to bounce back from Pinehurst.
Scheffler and DeChambeau have the games to win anywhere, as they’re excellent ball-strikers. DeChambeau gets the edge in putting, but with Scheffler’s current form, it’s difficult to bet against him. The problem here is that the odds for the top guns are very short.
That’s why I’m going down the board and taking Tommy Fleetwood to break his major-championship duck. Even though he missed the cut here at Royal Troon eight years ago, since then. Fleetwood has been on three Ryder Cup teams, winning two of them.
The atmosphere in Scotland will be similar, and I can’t think of a better place for Fleetwood to win his first major. The odds are just too good to ignore.
